Lesson 12 - Past Tense of होना

This lesson will teach you how to say was and were. There are also some guidelines for the postpositions को and से.

When the subject is masculine singular, use था. When the subject is masculine plural, use थे. When the subject is feminine singular, use थी. And when feminine plural, use थीं. See the table below.

I wasमैं थामैं थी
you were (informal)तू थातू थी
you wereतुम थेतुम थीं
you were (formal)आप थेआप थीं
he, she, it wasवह थावह थी
we wereहम थेहम थीं
they wereवे थेवे थीं

Some Uses of को and से

These postpositions are very important in Hindi. They are usually easily understood, but knowing how to use it correctly can be tricky. Here are all the verbs that pertain to communication (speak, tell, talk, call, invite, ask, request, meet), and a sample phrase to show when to use को or से. Keep in mind that it is the person being communicated with that takes the postposition, not the message being communicated.

to speak with X - X से बोलना

to talk to X - X से बात करना

to call X - X को फ़ोन करना

to ask X - X से पूछना

to request from X - X से मांगना

to tell X - X को बताना

to invite X - X को बुलाना

to meet X - X से मिलना

In some cases, को is omitted but the nouns before it remain inflected. This can be very confusing. Perhaps the most common case is when saying, to X's house. को is usually omitted in this case, so to my house is said, मेरे घर. Note that house is singular.

I am coming to your house. - मैं आपके घर आ रहा हूँ।
